Halloween Recipes: Zombie Fingers Cookies

Ingredients:

  • 2 Eggs

  • ¼ Teaspoon of Vanilla (1ml)

  • ½ Cup of Butter, softened (112g)

  • ½ Cup of Confectioner’s Sugar (60g)

  • 5 Tablespoons of Granulated Sugar (63g)

  • ¼ Teaspoon of Salt (1.5g)

  • 1 2/3 Cup of Flour (233g)

  • Sliced Almonds

  • Cinnamon

  • Red Food Coloring

  • Black Cherry Jam (optional)

Directions:

  1. Separate one egg white from a yolk and set aside. Whisk together the yolk, remaining whole egg and vanilla. Set aside.

  2. In a bowl, beat the butter, confectioner’s sugar, granulated sugar, and salt together until fluffy. Add in the egg mixture and blend well. Next, add the flour and beat until there are no dry streaks of flour.

  3. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 20 to 30 minutes or until it is firm and easy to handle.

  4. Preheat oven to 350 F and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Separate the dough in half and keep one half in the refrigerator until you are ready to work with it.

  5. Sprinkle a bit of flour on the surface you’re working on, and start shaping pieces of dough into fingers. I also used a bit of cinnamon to make the dough look a bit dirtier (zombies aren’t exactly clean). Here, it is up to you how big you want to make them; I used about one to two inch balls of dough for each finger. If you do not want the cookies to puff up too much then keep each finger skinny and about two to three inches long.

  6. Pinch the dough in two places to create knuckles. Using a toothpick, make indentations in the knuckles and gently mark the surface of the rest of the finger to create texture.

  7. Coat the almond slices in cinnamon to create a dirty or decaying effect. Dip one end of each almond slice in the red food coloring and press it down on the fingers you formed to create nails.

  8. As final touches, put as much blood (food coloring) as you want on them and if you want a glossy coat on the cookies, brush them with the egg white.

  9. Bake the cookies for about ten minutes. Let them cool and serve them with some jam or preserves for dipping. I used black cherry jam for its dark red color, but you can use any flavor you want.

  10. Enjoy!
